THE BEACH:
The Hotel "Castello di San Marco" has a private beach of sand and pebbles, among which stand the black stones of Etna, which enjoys an intense blue of the sea.
Small white gazebos with their light sails, will be your refuge for wonderful relaxing days just a few steps from the water.
Immersed in nature, our private beach is separated from the hotel by a small wooded area that gives the feeling of being on a wild island. No building overlooks the beach and turning towards the mountain you can only see trees and the majestic summit of the volcano.
THE HISTORY:
Ignazio Sebastiano Gravina Cruyllas, Principe di Palagonia, continuando con più energie quanto era stato intrapreso dal padre, procede nell’opera di riorganizzazione dell’economia del feudo e delle sue infrastrutture .
Ed è nell’ambito di questo programma che nel 1689 intraprende la costruzione di una nuova residenza nella spiaggia di Calatabiano dove esiste una sorgente d’acqua dalla quale deriva la denominazione data alla contrada “dell’Acquicella” .
Con atto di obbligazione del 30 Gennaio 1689 i mastri Francesco Liuzzu, Giannetto di Leonardo, Mario Panebianco e Giovanni Arcidiacono di Acireale si impegnano col Principe di Palagonia, Ignazio Sebastiano Gravina Cruyllas, alla costruzione del fondaco dell’Acquicella e alla costruzione di una residenza per il Principe stesso .
Per l’esecuzione degli intagli in pietra lavica del fondaco e della residenza vengono incaricati i Mastri Flavetta di Acireale .
Il complesso dei fabbricati dello scalo dell’Acquicella non subisce danni rilevanti nel terremoto del 9 e 11 Gennaio 1693 dei quali non si fa cenno nella perizia stimativa del Novembre dello stesso anno .
Ai fabbricati esistenti ne vengono aggiunti dei nuovi da Ferdinando Francesco Gravina, succeduto al padre nel 1694 .
Nel 1697 viene edificata la Chiesa di S. Antonio da Padova che ancora esiste a lato della casina.
Delle aggiunte e degli aggiustamenti fatti eseguire da Ferdinando Francesco Gravina abbiamo una succinta relazione del 1718 dalla quale risulta anche che egli fece aggiungere al “casale grande” altre due torrette “garite” sul lato nord in aggiunta a quelle già esistenti sul lato opposto
Sembra che Ignazio Sebastiano III, succeduto a Ferdinando Francesco nel 1737, non abbia fatto eseguire i lavori e che sia stato invece Ferdinando Francesco Gravina ed Alliata, investito del Principato di Palagonia e della Signoria di Calatabiano nel 1747, a dare l’assetto definitivo alla residenza realizzando lo scalone a tenaglia davanti alla facciata est ed il coronamento con vasotti e volute dello stesso prospetto e delle quattro torrette .
Le ultimissime vicende del fabbricato riguardano l’utilizzazione di esso e del terreno circostante come sede di una struttura alberghiera.
Dopo un periodo in cui il Castello veniva frequentato solo dai contadini del borgo; nell’anno 1971 la famiglia Murabito, avendo scoperto questo sito meraviglioso, decideva di condividere la sua bellezza con i visitatori che da tutto il mondo provenivano.
Di certo il Principe Ignazio di Palagonia, non avrebbe mai immaginato che il suo Castello sarebbe diventato meta di viaggiatori di ogni parte del mondo, ma dopo tutto crediamo che sarebbero stati accolti con la stessa proverbiale ospitalità, allora come oggi.
